Spelt is one of the worldâ€™s oldest domesticated crops. People have grown this grain for over 9,000 years, and it has genes that trace back to cultivars planted in ancient Mesopotamia. In fact, the Sumerians â€” who are believed to be the worldâ€™s first brewers â€” almost certainly made beer from spelt. Spelt malt produces mild, nutty flavors backed by tangy acidic notes. Itâ€™s considered to be a good wheat alternative. Sold with the hull on, this spelt malt is good for adding rustic character to traditional grain bills.
